United with One Desire: Recognizing the Spark in Our OFWs
Article written by Keisha Luib
Trickling down the spiral is an edgy pathway that many of our “kababayans” encounter. When an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) jumps into a new destination, they carry out their occupation with endurance and resilience. They are, first and foremost, the breadwinners, driven by a well-set initiative to provide for their families back in their province or village. This vital act of sacrifice – caring for their families from afar – should not overlook an OFW’s potential. Beneath the surface of their hard work is a desire to achieve something they dream of doing, to solidify their skills, or to create a final product of their own making.
In society, we must question whether or not resources in Hong Kong would offer these versatile individuals a voice in the local communities. Would ethnic discrimination, social status or other components hinder the pursuit of fulfillment for our OFW community?
This article demonstrates an exhilarating yet thought-provoking odyssey that aims to fully immerse our readers in the concept of who our OFWs are and the significance that countries offer to – or withhold from – our precious community.
A Glimpse of the Spark: My Tita’s Success
Ten years ago, I witnessed a so-called sparkling moment. As a naive six-year-old, I watched my Tita (aunt) with gleaming eyes as she dedicated her time to ensure evocative moments were being brought into my development.
She enjoyed attempting different pastries and simple desserts such as egg pies or carrot cakes as well as crocheting a myriad of impeccable designs which consisted of strap bags, wallets, tablecloths and even garments. As a curious child, I began to ponder: “Why does Tita seem to gain success with a bright smile on her face when she is baking or crafting?” As a kid, I endeavoured for thrill and the unknown, which then led me to asking my Tita how to use vivid strings with a golden stick to create cute wallets and miniature items. This allowed me to stay close with her and acknowledge her strong interests.
As I relate this to our overall community, I was immensely touched with my first-hand experiences and thought that OFWs must have a chance to showcase themselves with no fear, and have a comfort zone to grow and build themselves holistically. Until now, I remain grateful for the environment created in my home which is full of materials and supplies that she was able to use in honing her abilities before she finally left to pursue her dreams – just like a caterpillar growing into an elegant butterfly ready to soar.
The Path Forward: Advocating for Holistic Development
As we revolve around the ideology of “compassion towards the community”, we must also ask: How can we be the generation of leaders who aim to lift up our OFWs?
As a country or region, we are advised to create dedicated spots and platforms for members of our community to fully articulate, grasp and master their interests. At our organization, Full Phils, we enable OFWs to learn more about higher education scholarships, offering them hope that they can achieve what they desire or change their path in life. We organize regular gatherings and specialized workshops to signify that they are worthy of new opportunities where they can prioritize themselves and commit to their whole-person development. This includes their psychological well-being, physical health, and mental habits, which are often neglected under the immense pressure of working abroad.
By recognizing the spark, within the resilient heart of every OFW, we can ensure that their personal dreams are fulfilled.
They are not just surviving, but truly thriving and leading a more fulfilling life.
