Recognizing our Resilient OFWs: Full Phils Tribute for International Women’s Month

Article written by Aakshat Jolly

International Women’s Month is a time to acknowledge women’s efforts and contributions worldwide. Filipina overseas workers, particularly those employed as Foreign Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong, play a vital role in the economy as they support their own families back home. Their hard work is a testament to the strength and ambition of Filipino women. Furthermore, these women challenge traditional social norms and prove that they are not only caregivers but also powerful providers and changemakers.

The Backbone of Hong Kong Society
Hong Kong’s thriving economy and fast-paced lifestyle rely on the contribution of migrant domestic workers, many of whom are Filipinos. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) provide essential household support, care for children and the elderly, and enable local families to balance their professional and personal lives.

In a report conducted by international market research firm Frost & Sullivan, the economic contribution of migrant domestic workers was estimated at USD$12.6 billion in 2018, representing 3.6% of Hong Kong’s GDP. Additionally, households that employ a domestic worker enable more women to join the labor force.

Independent Providers and Breaking Social Norms
Beyond their impact on Hong Kong’s society, OFWs are also the lifeline of their families back home in the Philippines. They are heads of households and considered as family breadwinners. They send remittances that pay for their children’s education, build homes, and foot medical bills and emergencies. Women are not confined to the traditional role of homemakers anymore; rather, they are ambitious individuals who pursue jobs abroad to secure a better quality of life not just for themselves but for their families.

The journey of an OFW goes beyond achieving financial stability. Nowadays, it’s a bold statement of empowerment against outdated gender expectations. Women in the Philippines were expected to stay home, provide care for children and rely on their husbands for economic support. Today, Filipina overseas workers in Hong Kong and other countries break this stereotype by providing financial support as a result of paid caregiving work.

The Fight for Women OFW Rights
Unfortunately, despite the research and stories of OFW contributions to the economy, many Filipina domestic workers continue to face labor exploitation, harassment, and unfair treatment from employers. Numerous workers endure long working hours, poor living conditions and even abuse. Furthermore, these issues emphasize the need to continue advocating for women OFW rights to ensure that they are treated with dignity and respect. Governments and labor organizations must work together to enforce stronger protections for domestic workers, including fair wages, reasonable working conditions and hours, as well as safeguards against abuse. Awareness campaigns and legal support should also be strengthened to empower Filipina overseas workers to stand up against injustice and seek help when needed.

Conclusion
International Women’s Month serves as a reminder that women are more than just caregivers and household supporters. They are leaders, providers, and changemakers who shape societies and uplift the economy.

Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong embody this strength and resilience, proving that women can break barriers and challenge societal norms to carve their paths. As we honor their sacrifices and contributions, we must also continue advocating for their rights to ensure they are treated fairly with the respect they deserve.

Filipina domestic workers are not just helpers; they are heroes.
